CCSS ELA-Literacy RL 2.7 Using information from illustrations and words to demonstrate understanding of setting
Where in the World Are the Galápagos Islands?
To get to the Galápagos Islands, it is a long journey from the United States by plane or by boat. You would not only have to leave the country, you would be going to a whole other continent in another hemisphere! The Galápagos Islands belong to the country of Ecuador, in South America. Ecuador got its name from its location, right on the equator. The equator is an imaginary line that divides the Earth into a northern half, or hemisphere, and a southern half. Even though the Galápagos Islands are part of Ecuador, they are not attached in any way. They are far out to sea, and surrounded on all sides by the Pacific Ocean.
Use the map to complete this activity:
1. Find the Pacific Ocean and color it blue.
2. Color Ecuador green.
3. Color the Galápagos Islands purple.
4. Using a crayon, draw a dotted line from where you live to the Galápagos Islands. What would be the fastest route? Write about your journey on the lines below. How long do you imagine it would take to get there? Which part of the trip would you like best, travelling by land, sea, or air?
Note: Map is included in the Lesson Plan teachers receive with the OO-USA program.
